At Argent & Asher, we like to be transparent when it comes to the sustainability of our handcrafted jewellery. By embracing absolute honesty, we empower our customers to make conscious choices, allowing trust and a shared commitment to handcrafted ethical jewellery.

So we would like to share with you the inside scoop on the main types of gold jewellery which include, the classic solid gold, gold-filled, gold vermeil, and gold plated.

What is Solid Gold Jewellery?

Solid gold refers to pieces that are made with a percentage of pure gold throughout. When it comes to jewellery that stands the test of time, solid gold takes the spotlight with its exceptional durability and resistance to tarnish and corrosion, making it the perfect companion for your everyday adventures.

Understanding Solid Gold Alloys

Not all that glitters is 24-karat gold. The term "solid gold" in jewellery typically refers to 18k, 14k, or 9k gold. Pure 24k gold is too soft for everyday wear, making it impractical for jewellery. Our solid gold pieces incorporate alloys to enhance durability and introduce various shades. White, yellow, and rose gold result from specific alloy combinations, providing both aesthetic variety and increased resilience.

Rose Gold

Is made from a combination of 75% pure gold and 25% copper. The colour of the final product and its karat changes due to the blend of these two metals. The blend of 75% pure gold and 25% copper ratio makes 18k rose gold.

Yellow gold

The combination of blending pure gold with copper, silver and zinc, retains the purest colour of all the available gold colours. Gold in its purest 24k form is considered to be far more expensive and much less durable that that of 18k gold, or 14k gold. The higher the gold content the less durability the metal has and the higher the gold content, the brighter the yellow colour of the natural gold shines through.

White Gold

In its 18k form, white gold is mixed with 75% pure gold and 25% white metals like nickel and zinc, to give the gold its sought after white (silver coloured) sheen. White gold was originally created to mimic the naturally white metal, platinum, which is 40-50% more expensive than white gold.

Benefits of 14k Gold

At Argent & Asher, 90% of our jewellery is crafted in 14k gold, striking the perfect balance between durability and price point. This choice ensures that our pieces are not only enduring but also accessible for everyday wear. Take our Chunky Gold Hoops, for instance—a classic and sturdy pair that complements any style, offering enduring elegance without irritation or tarnishing. It's the ideal choice for those wanting longevity and versatility in their everyday jewellery.

Delving into 18k Gold Jewellery

For our luxury range, we turn to the vibrancy of 18k gold. This higher gold content produces a deep, luxurious colour, making it the preferred choice for pieces like our Scallop Diamond Eternity Band—an elegant symbol of commitment and style. The elevated gold purity also reduces the likelihood of allergic reactions, ensuring comfort for those who want to wear their luxury gems every day.

The Cleaning Process for Solid Gold Jewellery

Maintaining the forever sparkle of your solid gold jewellery is a breeze with this simple cleaning process. Gently rinse your pieces, use a mild soap, and pat dry with a soft cloth to keep your treasures shining for a lifetime.

What is Gold Plated Jewellery?

Gold plating involves applying a thin layer of gold onto a cheap metal like copper or brass, making it a less expensive option for jewellery. However, with regular use the thin gold layer will wear off in a short period of time because of the base metal constantly being exposed.

Caution on Gold Plated Jewellery

While gold plated jewellery offers an affordable option for short-term wear, it comes with limitations. The thin layer of gold can wear off over time, revealing the base metal beneath. Especially with earrings, the constant contact with the skin may lead to irritation and discolouration. Gold plated pieces require regular cleaning with warm soapy water after each use to maintain their appearance.

What is Gold-Filled Jewellery?

Gold-filled jewellery involves a thick layer of gold mechanically bonded to a base metal, like brass or copper, offering enhanced durability compared to gold-plated pieces. It's sturdier and more valuable than gold-plated pieces because it has more actual gold in it. Plus, gold-filled items are less likely to tarnish if you take care of them properly.

The Cleaning Process for Gold-Filled Jewellery

To clean gold-filled jewellery, gently wipe it with a soft cloth or use a mild soapy water solution and a soft brush (you can use a toothbrush) . Remember to avoid harsh chemicals, and store the pieces in a cool, dry place when not in use.

Note that you wont be able to wear gold filled jewellery on holiday to swim, or shower for example without it tarnishing more quickly.

What Really is Gold Vermeil Jewellery?

Gold vermeil jewellery stands apart from gold-filled jewellery by using sterling silver as the sole base metal. This creates a look that closely resembles real gold but comes at a more affordable price. Like gold filled jewellery, gold vermeil lasts longer than gold-plated. The gold layer in

vermeil is real gold, bonded to sterling silver guarantees a top-notch quality. This if you keep up with proper maintenance of your gold vermeil gems because they can rust.

The Cleaning Routine for Gold Vermeil Jewellery

To clean gold vermeil jewellery with a gentle routine: rinse under lukewarm water, cleanse with a mild soap, and pat dry with a soft cloth. Remember to store each piece separately, avoid harsh chemicals, and do regular checkups in case of possible tarnishing.
